1912. Eleven-year-old Francie Nolan lives in a poor neighborhood in Brooklyn, with her brother Neely and their parents, Johnny and Katie. Her mother, determined to offer her children a better life, works as a cleaner to make ends meet - of course, the little ones also help with what they manage to earn from the various odd jobs they do. What is certain is that they cannot rely on the kind-hearted Johnny, because he is an alcoholic and cannot hold down a job. The difficulties are many. From the moment Francie was born, she had to be strong. Because it is not easy to grow up under such conditions. It takes courage, foresight and insight. So, to escape her poor world, she resorts to her imagination and finds an outlet in her love of books.
